Obviously the new engine OVERALL looks worse because its unfinished. But like others have stated, I appreciate the subtle changes I see in contrast, realness of lighting, sharpness of some textures etc. I cant wait to see the finished product since there seems to be much potential in Unity 5. I dont think the art team should feel bad, I only wish to encourage them to do amazing work on this improved platform.

Yeah, maybe the thread title is misleading since it implies everything is already improved. Didnt think about that when I posted. Sorry! Maybe someone could change it to "unity 5 graphics discussion" or something better?

Yeah, I don't think there's any reason to worry. They're a hardy bunch, and I am sure they can read the intent and purpose of this thread just fine :)

You can change it yourself if you want, by using the full editor on the first page. Personally I think this title is fine, so I won't.

If I was on the art team right now, I'd be facepalming / heartbroken / drinking ;)

 

No, after MONTHS of wrangling with Unity 5 and trying to get it to run without breaking, the art team may be drinking — but in celebration, rather than despair.

 

Sure, some things look less impressive than before — and some things look much better! — but performance has improved massively, the potential is there to make some fantastically well-lit locations, and, well, it fucking works. That in itself is a gods damned miracle.

 

At the end of the day, Unity 5 is never going to look the same as Unity 4. Two completely different lighting systems, brand new shaders, lots of small changes that add up. We'll strive to bring it as close as possible to our original artistic vision while also using the power of Enlighten in Unity 5 to make some things look better, or different, or closer to how we originally envisioned it. Comparing the two will be a bit unfair: they are, fundamentally, two different games now. One is the past, the other the future. The future hasn't quite arrived, but we're getting there.

 

And look: not everything will look great when we release the Unity 5 version, and not everything will be fixed/improved/polished by the time Book Four rolls around, but this game is a work in progress. It's always been that. We'll keep improving it until they pry it out of our cold, dead hands (to paraphrase an asshole).

I was thinking the same. If I was on the art team, I would be looking at these comparisons and, no doubt, would be saying to myself, "Ooooh, I see where I can make this look even cooler!". The problem with that, of course, is that it becomes and never-ending cycle of improvement, review, more improvement, review, rinse and repeat. :)

Clearly they not being improving the game forever. I think the final result of book 4 will not need more improvements when it be released :)

 The one thing that really bothers me are the sources of red light in Propast. Doesn't look that good on the character model imho. :)

 

You are absolutely right. I have been thinking about that too. Perhaps an artificial lighting source could be implemented in Unity 5, if it's not there yet, adding more white light while lowering the red light apparently coming from the red Chinese light lamps. This artificial light source, could also add the characteristic blue light now missing in Propast many places.

The people in this scene doesn't look weird, they are just exposed to red light.

Prediction: most of the lighting/texture micro-issues won't be resolved, and DFC will end up looking worse/weirder than it used to.

Oh come on... GOG beta next week?!

It's obvious that it looks really different (and maybe I should substitute some of the wiki pics in light of the new lighting). Being used to the old graphics, "different" of course means "wrong" far too immediately. I guess that the little quirks of the former Unity version gave Chapters a very individual touch, but it also was a touch people were in fact complaining about like hell back in 2014 ("TOO MUCH BLOOM" etc.). The new screens look more professional to me, they definitely do, but that may also mean that some of the individuality is lost.

 

I'll miss the ol' senselessly omnipresent glowing object luminance for a bit. :)
