In this thread I will showcase and gather some before and after pictures of the UNITY 5 version of Dreamfall Chapters!

If you have screenshots, feel free to include them in this thread.

This thread is to show the differences to those who are wondering about it but dont want to download the beta or start a new playthrough etc.

Keep in mind these are BETA footage and dont necessarily represent the finished product since things may and will probably change. There seem to be missing lighting effects, shadows and particles.

And obviously these screenshots include SPOILERS FOR ALL BOOKS!

Also, my graphics settings are all MAXED. Motion blur/noise/grain/depth of field are all disabled due to personal preference, gamma is set to 47%, bloom is on. On lower settings some details may be different.

First link is always the "old" engine and the second is the new UNITY 5 version of the game. (remember its beta).

Tip for viewing to those not "tech savvy". Open both ulrs in separate tabs on your browser and switch between them for added effect. (Couldnt be bothered to make gifs)

EDIT: THIS IS OLD BETA FOOTAGE, NEWER SCREENSHOTS MIGHT BE PUT HERE LATER. (or go play it yourself, UNITY 5 version is out of beta!)

I think some of the newer screenshots actually look worse because theyre not done adding all the appropriate lighting effects to every area.

I will add more screenshots as I play the game and explore.

Yeah! So far it also seems a lot darker in places. You can see in the pics I just posted (7th) how the darkness kind of takes away from the detail though. (In the distance, but close up on the rock shes standing theres actually improved detail!)  I still prefer the new effects so far. And theyre still in beta ;)

Old ones look better. The new ones are so dark, it's like half the image is obscured.

To each their own, I guess... Here's what I think:

Many effects are still missing, yet the new shaders are clearly ahead of the old ones, especially in casting shadows and displaying texture details. Like they said, some areas still need to be lit properly (looking at the prison scene or the candles in April's boat), but I hope they generally go with the increased contrast. If not, I'll surely make me a SweetFX profile from now on. Directly comparing these screens made me realise how little I cared for the overuse of dull yet persistent luminosity in the original. It creates an almost unbearable tension which the new version still has enough of. Fitting for sceneries like Propast or Dreamtime, but not an entire game. Handle with care ;)

I'm really glad you posted this TheDreamer. The very first thing I noticed when I fired up the Beta was that the images seemed clearer and brighter. I'm glad to see it's not a figment of my imagination.

Some of the colors do seem a bit oversaturated, some scenes are too contrasty, and some are too dark. But, the extra sharpness -- I'll take that all day long.

I was going to post about it but you beat me to it, and did a better job than I would have anyway :)

I was wanting to make a post like this too, but when I couldn't find my old DFC screenshots I was reminded of the time I had to reformat my hard drive recently :( I wouldn't have had any old screenshots to compare, so I'm glad you did all the work!

I immediately noticed how much better everything looked when I started a new game. They lighting is much more realistic and it adds a lot of depth to the game, and brings out more detail in the textures. I'm glad they are doing this switch. I think it will be especially helpful for when they launch on PS4.

April's dead.

Ok, I was about to say...the new ones definitely look better.

Also, just a question...does zoe's initial outfit in Europolis change based on her career choice? I changed careers (didn't do that before) and was wondering because she was wearing a different outfit and had a ponytail.

Either way I am impressed...the graphics look tons clearer now.

Light and shadow in the screenshot quality, from what I'm seeing. How fitting. :)

The Dolmari boy seems to have no functioning lights hanging at his twig antlers. The dusk/dawn atmosphere at the funeral, signifying death and/or rebirth, has been removed. The hospital scene, formerly in a similar setting, now plays with blinding light, obscuring detail.

Torn on the characters, but would love to check it out on my rig soon. The warm blurry glow emanating from Chapters characters originally was in part removed in favor of a more sculptural light. As a result, darker scenes appear even darker in screenshots. However with the right gamma settings... grrrr. Gimme that build.

I'd like to see some Europolis shots though. If the peripheral vision blur has been removed or at least been significantly lessened, I can deal with a whole lot of alterations.

Added over 10 new shots, with some Europolis shots too. Keep in mind though that they said lens flares are bugged out and not working atm. I also noticed that some lights are not "turned on" by the looks of it. Im sure they will add more lighting effects as they go :)

EDIT: For example the screenshots where Zoe is talking to Queenie, you can see that queenies hair lacks some of the lighting of the old engine due to the purple lights and red lanters not being "turned on" yet.

I really think some of the "worse" things are due to it being beta. Its pretty obvious there are numerous effects missing. Shadows etc. For example I just compared the first therapy session in the beginning of the game. There are no shadows on the couch where Zoe is sitting in the beta etc. Little stuff like that make a huge difference.
