I've recently taken a seminar on legal theory and method in which we've been reading texts from Hannah Arendt, Giorgio Agamben and Jacques Rancière. One thing that has jumped out to me is the use of the word 'zoë', especially in Agamben. Now, zoë is taken from Greek and means (at least in this context) 'bare life', 'mere life' or the likes - meaning something akin to a "minimum" life, a life that is part of nothing else except the life itself. In this case it also means a kind of rightless person, someone completely pushed outside of society and law (it's complicated, and I don't get all of it, so excuse my perhaps somewhat inadequate explanation - this sould give the basic idea, though). Usually people like this are, for example, the paperless, those in internment or concentration camps, etc. (there is of course debate on who is what and what applies to whom and all that, but that's they are the basic usual examples)

And I'm thinking about Zoë Castillo in the beginning of Dreamfall, where she is purposeless, directionless and, in many ways, living a "bare" or "minimum" life. And I can't but wonder, is this a mere coincidence or was there in fact something more behind this name - whether it be this or something else?

(Hopefully, though, this thread won't be done with just a "yes" or "no" from someone ;))

My understanding of the name:

Zoe Maya Castillo: life, illusion/supernatural power, castle/home

But the names don't all have to mean something. A lot of characters name meanings may represent their story, but some may just be coincidence

Queenie referred to Zoe's last name, if I remember correctly she called her "castle-dweller" or something... but I don't think anybody referred to the name Zoe - YET :)

Yeah, of course. I mean, I expect this just to be a coincidence but I thought it is an interesting connection nevertheless. And who knows, maybe Ragnar has been reading his philosophy :) It'd be nice to hear from him! :D

I think Ragnar commented on the names in the series a bit in the past. Like...IIRC someone asked about the names Zoe and April in the Unstreaming. It definitely came up in conversation.

If I wasn't tired and the Unstreaming wasn't like a million hours long, I'd try to dig up what he said specifically. But since the Wiki is really easy to look at I can quickly pull up...

Ragnar: "Her name is very meaningful"

Dag: "Well, Castillo obviously means castle. And it's sort of, like, she.. This is too much for me to try to explain right now.. It really is."

Ragnar: "Well put! There's a lot of thought behind their names."

It looks like this takes place around the 4 hour, 25 minute mark if the citation is to be believed.

So yeah, I think this is an interesting topic for sure. ;)

I feel like somewhere in another thread (...maybe on the old forum...or maybe on the Unstreaming...) someone pointed out the whole April - Zoe; A - Z thing, which I always found interesting.

Also I'm on cold meds and rambling, so...ignore anything in here that's incoherent.

The citation should be correct (I wrote it down myself), but it's based on the twitch stream recording, which is no longer available, it seems. I think the entire thing should be found on youtube, but it's likely cut into smaller pieces.

Yeah, it's on Youtube. There's a playlist here that should have all of it. It's in 30 minute (ish) chunks, so you should be able to count in to the section in question pretty easily.

I just didn't bother to check who put that in the wiki, that's all. :)

It makes me unproportionately happy to see someone quoting Ragnar at himself.

Zoë in Indian means: "She that had long hair but then had it short without being magically turned into a lesbian all of a sudden."

I could be a little bit off with the translation though.
