Those are chavs or canis in Spanish. They wear hoop earrings because it's part of their clothing style (Burberry clothing, caps, too much  jewellery...). This doesn't mean that everyone who wears hoop earrings is automatically a chav. Aka, Zoe's case.

Or... Chonis, in the case of the girls! (Right...??)

Yeah. Because fashion's so going to be static for the next 200 or so years.

What I was gonna say. And blanket statements about "cultural perspective" in the US dont work either. What flies as fashion in, say, Chicago may be seen as vulgar and "trashy" just a few towns over.

Personally, I like 'em. On Zoë, that is.

'tis all a matter of taste, and each has their own :)

I dunno, I think The IT Crowd does a decent job of stereotyping :) Could never get into Little Britian though. Their characters were very well thought out. Reminds me of 'Allo 'Allo in terms of effort/thought that went into it

Very much so and this thread to be taken with a pinch of salt :) The hoopiness really does have negative connotations in some demographics but hey, I'm no style guru - I've been accused of color blindness :). If it's in, it's in.

It's also possible I have my head up my own arse.

Oh, cool, then we can start complaining about the colors they're picking for her clothes too? ;)

I'm from the US and I have no strong feelings on hoop earrings.

They can look nice in quite a few situations. They also do seem tacky over a certain size.

I'm just happy to have more options with how the characters look. It'll probably be a nice way to change things up after I replay DF:C for the billionth time.  :P

Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about?

wow...everyone wants to play dress-up with zoe...makes me laugh...there are famous and very rich people that wear hoop earrings...I see j-lo, Jennifer Lopez , wear them most of the time on American idol and she is a multi-millionaire...but I love that nose stud, fits zoe nicely.

Yup and (personally), I think everyone one of those people looks like a knacker wearing 'em :) I know I'm entirely out numbered on this though :) I'll build a bridge

I do like the nose stud

lol @ diskjunky and I agree there is some trash that wear them but as life goes, trashy people are everywhere...it really matters who is wearing what and how they hold themselves with that item...but that pic you posted, if that was you , was the extreme case of who shouldn't wear hooped earrings ...lol

Those kinds of people are the only ones wearing hoop earrings here (or near enough) - hence the association in my head. But you're right, it's an extreme case :)

To be honest I don't like the earrings either. It's just because of how they look, not because of any association. I'm not asking anyone to remove them.
